International Colloquium Explores Multicultural Societies and Hate Speech: Cláudia Amorim to Participate in Key Roundtable

NEWS AND EVENTS 03 Oct 2025

On 13th and 14th October 2025, the Faculty of Law at the University of Lisbon will host the International Colloquium “Multicultural Societies, Hate Speech and Responsibility”, organised by the Centro de Investigação de Direito Privado. This event will bring together leading academics, legal professionals, and experts from Portugal and abroad to discuss the complex challenges posed by hate speech in increasingly multicultural societies.

The colloquium features a diverse programme, including keynote lectures, panel discussions, and roundtables addressing topics such as the regulation of hate speech in Europe and the United States, the limits of tolerance, and the legitimacy of punishment for hate speech in democratic societies. The event will also examine the intersection of multiculturalism, constitutional law, and civil and criminal liability for hate speech.

A particular highlight will be the roundtable “Freedom of Expression and Hate Speech”, moderated by Alexandra Vilela (Lusófona), where Cláudia Amorim, Sérvulo’s Partner and President of Fórum Penal, will join other distinguished panellists including Sílvia Alves (FDUL), Marisa Torres da Silva (Journalist/NOVA FCSH-UNL), and Carolina Soares (APAV, Internet Safety Line Lead). This session promises a dynamic and plural debate on the boundaries of free speech and the legal and social responses to hate speech in contemporary society.

The colloquium will be conducted entirely in English, fostering an international and multidisciplinary approach. Registration is open and can be completed online at www.cidp.pt/eventos.
