Launch of the second edition of the Annotated Constitution, under the coordination of Jorge Miranda and Rui Medeiros

NEWS AND EVENTS 14 May 2010

Within the context of constitutional revision currently becoming a highly relevant issue emerges the second edition of the Annotated Portuguese Constitution, coordinated by constitutionalist Jorge Miranda and Sérvulo & Associados partner Rui Medeiros.
The tome, of over 1,400 pages, covers all matters related to fundamental rights, and it includes contributions by several highly regarded specialists on the subject.

When asked whether the publication of the Annotated Constitution is justified precisely at this point in time, Rui Medeiros, professor at the Universidade Católica and partner at Sérvulo & Associados, does not hesitate to answer that: “The big themes spoken about in the context of a future constitutional revision are not really connected to the framework of fundamental rights that the Constitution establishes. The main politico-constitutional questions are not found in this domain; the doubts are about other issues. How to configure social security in a time of crisis for the Welfare State? What role should the State and civil society play in the areas of education, health and social security? Is it justified to keep a set of norms on economic plans or on agricultural, industrial and commercial policies almost 25 years after joining the EU? How can the political system gain credibility? What changes are necessary to end the eternal conflict between the State and the autonomous regions?”

The book launch will take place on 17 May at the Buchholz bookshop in the Chiado area of Lisbon, at 6:30pm. The event will be hosted by the President of the Constitutional Court, Counselor Dr. Rui de Moura Ramos.
