Patrícia Akester launches book on Copyright Law

NEWS AND EVENTS 02 Mar 2017

On March 9, Patricia Akester, head of SÉRVULO's Intellectual Property department, launches her new book on Copyright Law and related areas (Código de Direito de Autor e Direitos Conexos), at Lisbon's Grémio Literário.

According to the book's preface, written by José Jorge Letria, Director of the Portuguese Association of Authors (SPA - Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores), the work "should be read by authors and legislators, by policy makers and by consumers because it is a valuable and fluent contribution to the analysis of a subject which is not commensurate with light approaches and with overly circumstantial reflections". This book is launched at a time when, as the author states, the current "promise of universal, instant and forcibly free access to cultural goods threatens the survival of the conceptual foundations that make possible the process of intellectual creation". Thus emerges "a fundamental question: how can our society guarantee the dignity and the subsistence of the creator and the survival of the cultural industries in the digital age?".

In addition to this, José Jorge Letria adds that Patrícia Akester's book merits attention because, placing the problem in a chronological and conceptual context, it provides answers to the questions that citizens, common users and creators place.

The book was commissioned by Almedina and each chapter is individuall annotated, and it methodically includes references to and short analyses of relevant national and EU legislation and jurisprudence, as well as considering national, EU and international legal instruments.
