Miguel Santos Almeida

At SÉRVULO since 2013, Miguel Santos Almeida is a partner in the Litigation & Arbitration and Sports Law departments. He develops a practice with a particular focus on criminal and civil litigation, handling criminal and administrative offense cases, as well as civil and commercial disputes, both in court and arbitration proceedings. Simultaneously, he is involved in sports-related disputes and in providing legal counsel to clubs, sports federations and sports agents on sports law matters. He has been an Arbitrator at the Portuguese Court of Arbitration for Sport, since 2019. He also is a member of the Disciplinary Commission of the International Judo Federation. He graduated in Law from the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon, in 2009. He holds a Master’s degree in Law and Management from the Faculty of Law of the Nova University of Lisbon and the Nova School of Business and Economics, since 2016. He also concluded graduate studies in Arbitration, at the Faculty of Law of the Nova University of Lisbon, in 2015. In 2015 he won the 16th edition of the “Prémio CMVM”, an award granted yearly by the Portuguese Securities Commission (CMVM – Comissão do Mercado de Valores Mobiliários). Between 2009 and 2013, he was a lawyer at «Carlos Pinto de Abreu e Associados». He is a member of the Forum Penal – Association of Criminal Lawyers and the Portuguese Sports Law Association. He joined the Portuguese Bar Association in 2012. He is an occasional guest speaker at conferences and on graduate courses on matters related to his areas of activity.

Relevant Experience

Assisting in sanction procedures, namely in cases concerning criminal, administrative or disciplinary offences, both on the side of the defence and of the prosecution. Special focus on the area of major economic regulation (banking, capital markets, competition and media), in white-collar crime (economical-financial or of employees), in tax crimes and crimes against property and honor.

Assisting in litigation cases, before state and arbitration courts, of civil and commercial nature, namely in contractual and non-contractual liability cases, as well as on insolvency and recovery procedures. 

Assisting in litigation cases of sports nature before sports associations, state and arbitration courts, namely in disciplinary matters and regarding the termination of professional sports employment contracts. 

Assistance on the transfer of players and on the negotiation of sports employment contracts, training contracts and representation and career management agreements. 

Assistance in civil and commercial contracts. 

Risk evaluation, prevention and implementation of compliance policies.
