Deferral of the payment of Social Security contributions

SÉRVULO PUBLICATIONS 20 Mar 2020

The spread of COVID-19 has led to several adversities in companies’ regular operational performance, legitimising a major legislative profusion to address the new challenges.

In view of supporting the economic activity, rules for the deferral of the payment of Social Security contributions are being defined.

To this end, the Portuguese Minister of Labour, Solidarity and Social Security has announced the suspension of the deadline for the payment of Social Security contributions that are due by companies, which would otherwise ceased on March 20th.

Likewise, by information issued by Madeira’s Social Security Institute (known as IP-RAM), the deferral of the deadline for the payment of Social Security contributions, in the autonomous region of Madeira, has also been confirmed.

We shall now await the regulation of the terms for the deferral of those contributions, as well as the definition of the respective rules, by the Portuguese Government.
